First of all, I should warn you about this post having nothing to do with books. It's just random thoughts occured to me while listening to Shinedown. Also, note that throughout the post I use the pronoun we, I talk just as much about myself as anybody else.
I've been bullied. Most probably you've been bullied. Or you currently are. Everybody was/is. And we sure like to talk about how we were bullied and how it sucked. It sure did, I don't say it didn't, I experienced not having friends and breaking down crying the day before the end of spring holiday for I didn't want to go back and face my luggage. But that is not what I want to talk about.
So I was listening to the song and was thinking about how we shame others for being bullies and screwing us up as children (or we thank them for making us who we are now). But if everybody was a victim then who was the bully? It was also us, but we somehow forget to mention that. The fact that we also made fun of that weaker guy. That we also spread gossips about that shy girl. Most times we forget to mention that, which is fairly normal for people like to remember the injustices against them, not the ones they had against others And the fact that we turn against one is also understandable, especially if we were the previous victims. One would happily join the bullies if that meant he/she is not the subject of the joke anymore. But I still feel like, if we want to talk about bullying, we have to mention this part as well. That being bullied is bad, but becoming a bully so you fit in is way worse, since in the first case you can come to terms with yourself, but in the second you might be that last push, or if not the last then that lust but one (and so on) and living with that is not easy (in case you have a working conscious) to say the least.
When talking about bullying we have to mention how easy it is to become a bully yourself. There will always be bullies and bullied ones, for there are stronger and weaker people, question is who we support with our strenght.
